In the early 90’s, OEM’s were generally skeptical about outsourcing of Medical Product Development and Manufacturing. Components and commodity assemblies of course, were outsourced on a regular basis. More and more OEM’s and Start-Up companies are outsourcing both development and manufacturing of increasingly more sophisticated products, the growth rate of outsourcing is said to be in the neighborhood of 17% per year, with $8.3 billion being expended on outsourcing in 2003 in the US alone.

While Start-Up companies in the early 90’s rarely outsourced, the trend is toward more outsourcing of product development and manufacturing. In fact, the “Virtual Start Up Company” model is not only being accepted, but in some cases, being encouraged by investors.

The talk will deal with the whys and wherefores of this growth both in the established OEM companies and the Start-Up companies. We will also talk about where the trend is headed.
