Event Speaker Bio:

Erica Fawell, Ph.D., MBA is a specialist in the business and science of translational medicine. Having dealt with many issues and challenges firsthand as a bench scientist, biotech and pharma executive, consultant and entrepreneur, she recognized an opportunity to effect change within the current discovery-to-market process.

Founder and editor of a newsletter on translational science, research and medicine reaching a broad audience, Erica writes articles that cover a wide range of topics that appeal to research institutes, biotechs and pharmas, lawyers and advisors, VC’s and other funding bodies with an interest in translational medicine. Her earlier career included executive positions at pharma and biotech companies, and consulting to individuals and institutions involved in the commercialization process.

Erica earned a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of Leeds. She completed post-doctoral training at Rutgers, the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Harvard Medical School. She subsequently obtained an MBA from Simmons Graduate School of Management, Boston.

Mari Paul, JD, MBA is the Founder of Life Science Leaders, San Francisco, and has 20 years executive search experience, including 12+ years in the life sciences. Mari spent almost 20 years providing tax and financial advice to such companies as Price Waterhouse, Coopers & Lybrand, Bank of America and Fujitsu before changing her focus to the human resource. She realized that putting the right leaders to the right use benefits companies more than putting money to the right use.

A regular contributor on careers to Nature Biotechnology, Mari holds a degree in Finance with honors an MBA and a JD from Santa Clara University.

Broadly defined, Translational medicine concerns:
1) Speeding up the efficient transformation of basic science concepts into drugs and therapies;

2) Improving the bench-to-bedside development of drugs, devices and therapies.

Changes and possibilities occurring in all aspects of the process are leading to both improved efficiency of developing drugs, devices and therapies and improved healthcare economics. New talents and skills are also needed to make a biotech venture successful.

Why do I need to know about Translational Medicine?

If you are involved in any stage of drug, diagnostic, therapeutic or medical device development, it is critical to stay abreast of changes occurring in the market place. However, while each small change or improvement is important to the time, cost, or probability of success, of any single approach, a sea of change is being adopted in medical sciences.
