The life sciences industry had been relatively slow to adopt outsourcing as a business model. In the medical device sector, outsourcing initially gained traction in the manufacturing phase, and many large medical device companies have established international relationships to capitalize on low-cost labor for profit improvements. As the outsourcing model has matured, both established and emerging companies have recognized that outsourcing other key areas of product design and development, particularly research and development, can drive significant time-to-market and cost advantages with no risk to product quality or regulatory compliance. The outsourced development market is growing at >20% with a few companies like Circle Medical emerging as the primary choice of both VC backed and major device companies.
